What does a Surgical Technologist do?
surgical techSurgical Technologists are vital members of the surgical team, trained to fill two important roles: the “scrub” person and the “circulating” person.

In either role, they must maintain a sterile environment, and observe and report vital data.
  • The scrub person is responsible for preparing the operating room for use and anticipating the surgeons’ needs by passing instruments and equipment to the surgeon during surgery. Additionally, the scrub person is charged with the care of the operating room after surgery.
  • The circulating person oversees the coordination and management of an OR. Duties include:
    • greeting, identifying and positioning the patient
    • securing the necessary supplies
    • assisting the anesthesiologist
    • and assisting in patient care during and immediately after surgery
Surgical Technologists may also find employment in surgeon’s offices, delivery rooms, Ambulatory Surgery Centers, and organ procurement teams.
