After the Race! Dr. Caputo's Race for Cancer.

Andrew E. Caputo, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon with Orthopedic Associates of Hartford, successfully finished one of the biggest challenges of his life, the La Ruta de los Conquistadores.  On November 14, 2008 he participated in the La Ruta de los Conquistadores with some of the best “hard-core” mountain bike racers in the world.  The ride was an intense, four-day 221-mile mountain bike race across Costa Rica.  His "Race for Cancer" was to raise funds in honor of his wife Allyson who faced one of the biggest challenges in her life, her own battle with ovarian cancer.

Funds raised are donated to the Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center-Avon. The center offers many of the services available to patients at Hartford Hospital’s Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center,  including radiation therapy, medical oncology, consultation and exam rooms, nutrition and social service support, an education center, a boutique and a community room. It helps to serve patients in the Farmington Valley area by providing Radiation Oncology with Medical Oncology and chemotherapy infusions in one location, making combined therapies easier and more accessible for patients in the area.  For more information on the Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center-Avon, click here.

While receiving her outpatient chemotherapy treatments at both the Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center and in Avon, Allyson often thought how nice it would be to get some fresh air and sunshine to brighten her day and make her feel strong and healthy.  Considering this, the Caputos are raising funds to support the creation of an outdoor area appropriate for patients and visitors. As residents of Avon, both Allyson and Andrew enjoy the outdoors and realize the healing qualities of fresh air and sunshine.
