JOHN K. SPRINGER HUMANITARIAN AWARD

The 2011 Winner:
Dr. Sharon A. Diamen
It was our great fortune when John Kelley Springer joined Hartford Hospital in 1971 and then served as CEO for the next 20 years. We mourn his recent passing.

He was perhaps most well known and remembered for developing the Life Star Air Medical Program in 1985. However his contributions to the healthcare system in Connecticut and to the health and welfare of the entire Hartford community were enormous. From his instrumental and visionary creation of Connecticut Health Systems and MedSpan to his long list of community and advocacy initiatives, John was truly a man of the people. His work with the Urban League of Greater Hartford, the American Hospital Association, the Hartford Seminary and the First Church of Christ Congregation amongst many others, established him as an individual committed to working within our community to enhance the lives of each and every individual.

John had the drive and commitment to improve the lives and well being of the citizens in our region through selfless, courageous, creative and compassionate acts. These are the qualities we recognize with the establishment of this award. He truly dedicated his purpose and being to making the lives of everyone around him better. From his warm caring greetings to his honest interest the lives of his employees to his regular rounding on the nursing units, John was an incredibly unique individual who has left his mark in this institution and in the hearts of all of us who had the honor and pleasure to know him. With this award we wish to keep that spirit alive and use his remarkable qualities to teach and motivate the future generations of caregivers at Hartford Hospital.

This Humanitarian Award recognizes members of our Medical Community who have exemplified the extraordinary qualities of compassion, civility, vision and integrity that we will forever associate with John Kelley Springer.
